When you think delicious breakfast and the perfect mom & pop restaurant, Red Apple Cafe in Aptos is the perfect spot! With a cozy atmosphere inside or tables outside, this place is a local favorite with a good menu, tasty eats and fresh ingredients! With the shelter in place, Red Apple Cafe has also had to quickly change over their business model to food to-go. And not just for breakfast, which they are known for, but they have great lunches as well. Talk about loyal customers who LOVE Red Apple Cafe, with a whopping 390 raving reviews on Google, here is few of those:
“Been going there for 30 years and the food and service is consistently great. The best eggs Benedict in the county.” - Joe Florence
“Delicious plethora of breakfast food. Highly recommend.” - Eric Kerkhof
“Since moving out here from Georgia, this has been the only place capable of filling my craving for delicious southern breakfast. That being said, there is a ton of diversity on the menu, seems to be something for everyone. Previously tried the Crab cake benedict and it was super flavorful. Once, I had early breakfast with a friend, found out I had to take a girl out to brunch, and ended up eating here twice in one morning... NO SHAME. Sweet staff and a speedy kitchen as well.” - Warren Simmons
We were more than happy to feature Red Apple Cafe in today’s Santa Cruz Doors interview with the owners, Dan & Gracia Krakauer:
Tell us how long you’ve been in business here? The original Red Apple Cafe was opened in 1988!
How did you get started? The Red Apple Cafe was started in 1988. There were two previous owners, but we took over in 2009. Along with our dedicated staff, we have worked hard to maintain the high quality of food and service that everyone has come to expect. A restaurant can only be suceessful when everyone's heart is in it, and we're lucky to have that!
What do you love about Aptos/Santa Cruz? We think that Aptos is a pretty special place. We have always known that our community is full of amazing people, but never has it been more evident than when times are tough. We appreciate all the love and support we have received from all of our regular customers and, hopefully, we've earned a few new ones too!
How has your business been affected by the pandemic and shelter-in-place? We have had to reduce our operating hours and, of course, can only offer take out meals. The Red Apple is home to 20 employees. We have had changed our scheduling so that at we can give most of our employees at least some hours every week. Even though their hours have been reduced, they still come in to work with smiles on their faces and a positive attitude. They are all looking forward to being able to get back to work on their normal schedules once the danger is over!
How have you made adjustments and how can we as a community support you? The community support has been wonderful in spite of the downturn in the day-to-day business. We enjoy seeing and talking to the people who come in. Our menu has not changed. In other words, you can still order breakfast or lunch any time! Burger for breakfast? Sure! Traditional Benedict for dinner with a glass of Storr's Chardonney or Bloody Mary? Absolutely! But, we are now only open from 8:00 am-3:00 pm for take out orders only.
What are your favorite dishes that you serve? Or customer fave? Well, typically, when people think of the Red Apple Cafe, they think "Amazing Breakfasts!" Customers love our 8 different Eggs Benedict selections. However, a real lunch favorite is our 1/2lb 100% Angus beef, flame-broiled California Burger with bacon, avocado and cheese on it. Our full menu is available on-line.
